Hormone Therapy

  • Medications that your body stops producing estrogen after menopause. The called aromatase inhibitors, these drugs block the action of an enzyme that androgens turnover in the body into estrogen. These drugs are only effective in postmenopausal women. Aromatase inhibitors include anastrozole (Arimidex), letrozole (Femara) and exemestane (Aromasin).
  • The surgery or medication to stop the production of hormones in the ovaries. In premenopausal women, surgery or medication off hormone production in the ovaries.

    Side effects of hormone therapy vary depending on the medication you receive, but usually the symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, decreased libido and mood swings. Side effects of aromatase inhibitors bind and muscle pain, and increased risk of bone thinning (osteoporosis).
